Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) – Systems & Design Engineer

Integrate engineering science methods, practical laboratory technical skills, and manufacturing know-how to improve existing and design new FOG‑based Inertial Measurement Units, their subassemblies, and components.

Essential Functions:

  • Apply expertise in FOG‑based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) systems to support existing and new projects in alignment with strategic plans.
  • Optimize technical solutions through first principles knowledge of optics, optoelectronics, mechanics, materials science, sensor technologies, digital signal processing or system modeling and testing.
  • Generate concepts, detailed designs, analyses and test results to realize FOG‑based IMU innovations, at IMU, subassembly, and component levels, for both existing and new products.
  • Work with vendors to obtain state‑of‑art subassemblies and components for use in existing and new products.
  • Quantitative analysis on FOG‑based IMU performance test data and guide calibration & test processes, manufacturing, and design improvements.
  • Perform requirements flow‑down to translate internal and customer system needs into IMU, subassembly, and component specifications and verification methods for use internally and with vendors
  • Support electronic design of analog, digital, FPGA, and CPU-level functions of FOG‑based IMUs.
  • Support mechanical design of components and subassemblies of FOG‑based IMUs
  • Support troubleshooting of both developmental and production products using both engineering science methods and hands-on interaction with test and manufacturing equipment.
  • Support FOG based IMU qualification and other test validation initiatives.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff to ensure effective development of their knowledge and expertise related to FOG based IMU systems development and testing

Critical Competencies:

  • Able to execute in all phases of development: concept, requirements, design, integration of mechanical, electronic, optical, and algorithmic (software & FPGA firmware) functions, verification, manufacturing, and product support.
  • Working with project engineers and program managers to interface with both commercial and military customers for technical definition and execution aspects of programs.
  • Strong computer (inclusive of computational modeling), engineering science, physics, math, and engineering laboratory skills required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills required.
  • Skilled in MS Office suite, proficiency or familiarity in several of the following: C++ or equiv., VHDL or equiv., MATLAB or equiv., LabVIEW, SOLIDWORKS CAD/PDM or equiv., Ansys FEA/CFD or equiv. tools required

Required Experience:

  • MS or PhD degree in Electrical, Aeronautical, Systems, or related Engineering discipline from an accredited educational institution (BS considered for highly experienced individuals) required
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in FOG‑based IMU design and test plus one or more of the following: inertial measurement unit design and test, optics, optoelectronics, mechanics, materials science, sensor technologies, digital signal processing or system modeling and testing required.
  • Experience combining the use of engineering science methods and hands-on interaction with manufacturing and test equipment to solve problems required.
  • Familiarity with digital designs that include microprocessors, FPGAs, and communications buses including RS485, USB, SPI, etc. required.
  • Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, both technical and business, to specify, design, implement, calibrate, and verify inertial measurement units required.
  • Good knowledge of project management methods with experience in planning and tracking tasks with a commitment to meet schedule and budget objectives required.
  • Experience supporting reliability design and testing required
  • Aerospace and Defense electronics experience desired.
  • Experience with MEMS based technologies is desired.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and/or Six Sigma, DFM, DOE and TQ systems desired
