Director of Optical Engineering

Greater Boston Area, MA

Work in markets that include aerospace and defense, factory automation, air and water quality environmental monitoring, electronics design and development, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, medical imaging and pharmaceutical research.​

Direct the activities of a staff designing and developing advanced infrared zoom lens systems. Assesses customer needs, documents system requirements, scopes development work, and oversees projects to timely completion. Evaluates final design to assure accomplishment of technical objectives. Interfaces with external and internal customers, presenting reports outlining the outcome of projects and makes recommendations for actions necessary to achieve desired product objectives. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the engineering design team.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Directs product conceptualization, design, and verification for infrared zoom lens development.
  • Allocates work within team and sets milestones for concurrent development projects.
  • Communicates effectively and foster a collaborative environment to ensure that all parties are working towards a common goal.
  • Performs detailed design work on projects as needed.
  • Functions as technical interface with key customers.
  • Manages team of 6-8 engineers, providing performance feedback and coaching.
  • Some travel required.

Job Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of relevant experience working on technology product development and managing technical teams.
  • Mastery of either optical design or mechanical design, with some lens development experience.
  • Proven experience managing teams of engineers in technology-based company.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business stakeholders, programs, customers, and/or direct line management in a product development environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills, particularly with highly technical content.
  • Efficacy in managing multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and must be eligible to apply for and obtain a security clearance from the U.S. Department of Defense.
