Senior Staff Laser Engineer

Redwood City, CA

Scientist or engineer to help develop new medical laser technologies and applications. This position is part of an R&D group that develops new product concept

Responsibilities

  • Develop new laser technologies and applications by experimentation and modeling. Design, setup, and conduct laboratory experiments and develop and apply software models to design and characterize the performance of new laser systems.
  • Stay current with developments in academia and industry by reviewing relevant literature and attending conferences. Apply this knowledge base to develop new products and applications.
  • Build and test prototypes of new product concepts.
  • Help define project priorities and work aggressively to meet the schedule for project milestones.
  • Summarize results in clearly written reports and presentations. Communicate status of projects and tasks regularly.
  • Support evolution of new products through the product development process.

Qualifications

  • In depth knowledge and experience in applying concepts of optics, laser physics, and electro-magnetism.
  • Experience with advanced concepts in laser physics, classical optics, and nonlinear optics is strongly preferred.
  • Experienced using software for data analysis and modeling of optical, thermal, or laser device physics or interaction with tissue. Examples include Mathematica, MatLab, Zemax, Paraxia, COMSOL, and Python.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A drive and passion for developing a holistic understanding to problems and developing creative, practical solutions in a timely manner.
  • A sense of urgency in driving projects and desire to set ambitious goals.
  • An interest and curiosity for biomedicine and biomedical applications.
  • Experience with fiber lasers, product development, or medical device design is a plus.

Education & Experience

  • A Ph.D. degree in physics, physical chemistry, or engineering is preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in the development of commercial free-space lasers
