Senior NPI Product Engineer

Bedford, MA

Work with several product development teams that develop, test, and deliver optical technology in laser beam steering solutions. Main focus will be working closely with the design team to transition prototypes into pilot builds and full production. As such, the candidate will be integral in developing manufacturing processes for new products, but may be asked to improve existing processes based on business needs

Education/experience:

  • BS in Optics, Physics or Systems Engineering is required, with 8+ years of experience.
  • Experience in moving high-tech manufacturing lines to contract manufacturers
  • Experience with Fiber & Free Space Optics (Lens Systems, Mirrors, Filters, Dichroics)
  • Knowledge of Gaussian Beam Propagation & Characteristics (M-Squared, Beam waist, divergence, etc) as it pertains to Laser Beams
  • Experience working in a Cleanroom environment
  • Understanding of optical coatings & coating failure mechanisms
  • Experience in developing ‘production-ready’ tooling/fixturing, including the understanding of trade-offs for opto-mechanical assembly processes
  • Proficiency in Solidworks is required. Zemax & LabVIEW will be a plus
  • Have skills in some of the following: precision optical alignment, epoxies, basic GD&T, CTE stack-up analysis, optics specifications, polarization control
  • Experience with Optical Metrology equipment like Zygo, Autocollimators, Beam-Profilers, etc
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control & Lean Six Sigma tools is desirable
  • Understanding of electronics and servo-based motion control of Galvanometers is a huge plus

Responsibilities:

  • Interface with the product development group in ‘pulling’ new products into manufacturing. Effort should be to have tools, fixturing & documentation ready in production when the project passes applicable phase gates
  • Collaborate with R&D to develop repeatable assembly procedures that can be handed-off to production
  • Develop and/or improve manual/automated assembly and test processes
  • Ensure assembly & test specifications are budgeted appropriately and clearly defined
  • Ensure that all technical know-how gained during the NPI phase, is transferred effectively to Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians
  • Drive the execution of DFx (manufacturability, quality, cost, testability & reliability) early on in the product transfer phase. Additionally, be instrumental in evangelizing DFx concepts to R&D
  • Assist in technical troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis efforts
  • Escalate technical roadblocks to management in a timely manner
  • Setup electronic Data Travelers in the MES system
  • Work with R&D to drive the release of costed product BOM in the PLM system
  • Ensure data-collection is weaved into the manufacturing process of transferred products, to facilitate SPC based analytics and data-driven decision making
