Principal Optical Engineer

We are seeking an accomplished Principal Optical Engineer to join our R&D team, specializing in the design, testing, and optimization of advanced optical systems.
This role involves working within multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative optical mounting structures, alignment mechanisms, and housing solutions. You will lead reliability modeling and testing for optical components and assemblies, ensuring high performance and durability across a range of applications.
This is a senior-level position that requires both deep technical expertise and the ability to mentor and guide other engineers, while working within a structured quality management framework.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage activities in the optical test lab, providing subject-matter expertise.

Develop, document, and implement test procedures and processes.

Review, analyze, and organize optical test data for performance validation.

Serve as the in-house expert on:

Geometric optics
-
LED illuminators, backlights, micro-displays
-
Collimators, concentrators, and holographic systems
-
Optical interference coatings
-
Injection molding, lens design, and precision optics fabrication/assembly

Integrate human factors into optical system design, especially for head-mounted display and wearable systems.

Produce complete system documentation and contribute to technical proposals for both internal and external stakeholders.

Validate designs through simulation, analysis, and laboratory testing.

Ensure best practices and quality standards are maintained throughout the design process.

Identify and resolve technical or procedural issues independently.

Act as the technical point of contact for suppliers, customers, and internal leadership.

Provide progress updates on schedule, budget, and technical compliance.

Maintain adherence to ISO 9001:2015 quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

8+ years’ experience in a product design environment focused on optics.

Strong organizational, time management, and leadership skills.

Familiarity with MS Project and optical measurement techniques.

Proven ability to translate unique concepts into manufacturable products.

Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.

Experience with sequential and non-sequential optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V).

Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25%).

Salary Range: $100,000 – $140,000 (DOE)
