Metal Optics Polisher

We specialize in electroformed and CNC machined components, as well as electrodeposited platings and vacuum deposition coatings. We serve various industries such as aerospace and defense, medical, UV and semiconductor, searchlights and industrial.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Metal Optics Polisher to join our precision manufacturing team. In this role, you will be responsible for polishing high-performance metal optical components to exacting standards.

Role Purpose

The Metal Optics Polisher is responsible for precision polishing, finishing, and surface preparation of metal optical components to achieve exact surface finishes, tolerances, and optical performance requirements. This role supports manufacturing processes for industries including aerospace, defense, semiconductor, medical, and scientific instrumentation while ensuring the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Scope & Responsibilities- Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform assigned duties in accordance with documented procedures and work instructions
  • Perform precision polishing of metal optical components including mirrors, reflectors, and molds
  • Prepare surfaces through grinding, lapping, and polishing processes to achieve required tolerances and finishes
  • Operate and maintain polishing equipment including laps and buffing machines
  • Inspect components visually and with measurement tools such as micrometers, interferometers, and profilometers
  • Ensure surfaces meet optical specifications including surface roughness, flatness/accuracy, and reflectivity
  • Follow detailed work instructions, engineering drawings, and process specifications
  • Maintain cleanliness of parts and workspace to prevent contamination
  • Document production steps, measurements, and inspection results accurately
  • Identify defects and perform corrective polishing as required
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and proper handling of materials and chemicals

Work Experience & Skills

Education:

High school diploma or GED required; technical certification preferred

Experience:

5+ years of experience in polishing, machining, optical fabrication, or related precision manufacturing environment preferred

Skills / Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of metal materials including aluminum, nickel, stainless steel, chrome, and specialty alloys
  • Familiarity with precision measurement tools and surface inspection techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of optical surface standards including scratch/dig, RMS roughness, surface accuracy, surface irregularity, and peak-to-valley (P-V) measurements preferred
  • Familiarity with CNC polishing or automated finishing equipment preferred
  • Understanding of coatings and plating preparation for optical surfaces preferred
  • Lean manufacturing or quality management system experience (ISO, AS9100) preferred

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements (if applicable)

Work Environment:

  • Manufacturing and/or cleanroom environment depending on application; exposure to polishing compounds, coolants, and industrial equipment; required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed

Physical or Operational Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25–50 lbs occasionally
  • Manual dexterity for handling small and delicate components
  • Good vision (corrected acceptable) for inspection and detail-oriented work
