 Optical Engineer--Illumination Systems

SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for evaluating feasibility of Laser and LED based illumination systems, and for the design, tolerances, manufacturing support, and testing design of such systems.  This position is required to support OEM business and the product development goals of the company, and to support ongoing production.  Other functions may be assigned and management retains the discretion to add or change duties.


  • In-depth understanding of first order optics and aberration theory.           
  • Ability to interface with customers to determine their needs, to present options and results in a manner consistent with good business sense.    
  • Ability to generate optical systems and components specification from system-level performance requirements.
  • Generate top-down architecture design, conduct in-depth analytical trade studies of possible technical approaches, topologies, tools and architectures. Develop designs for optical components, systems and products utilizing product specifications; perform functional and physical verification of the design.
  • Support setting up a design methodology integrating optical and mechanical design activities and using advanced simulation tools and processes selection.
  • Provide accurate and detailed requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical components.  Provide accurate test requirements and support design/ verification of test fixtures.
  • Interface with opto-mechanical and CAD designers to define tooling, optical mounting, and human interface requirements based on predicted worst-case optical tolerances.
  • Ability to explain optics-related issues to non-optical or non-technical persons.    
  • Complies with the Clean Room Protocol when in a clean room environment.
  • Provide optics designs support through product manufacturing.



  • Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment such as MTF benches, interferometers and photometers, and able of specifying such equipment.
  • Hands-on laboratory skills for assembly, alignment, calibration, and evaluation of optical systems. 
  • Experience with laser and LED illumination systems
  • Experience in non-sequential raytracing (Stray light analysis)
  • Expert user of optical design software.
  • Knowledge of Optical Alignment techniques and design.
